Your data never leaves your device
Grip & Balance is a strength and rehab training log for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. It is designed around a simple rule: your data never leaves your device — unless you export it and share it yourself, which only ever happens when you ask.
What we collect
Nothing. Grip & Balance has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no third-party SDKs, and no server. The app makes no network connections. Every workout, routine, and setting you create — including any pain marker you set and the exercises you tell the app you cannot do — is stored only in the app's private database on your device, protected with iOS Data Protection (encrypted whenever your device is locked). Those rules are yours alone: the app never infers one from your training.
Apple Health (HealthKit)
If you grant permission, Grip & Balance reads your Apple Health workouts to show the energy you burned during matching training sessions.
- When a session matches an Apple Health workout, the app saves that workout's energy figure onto the session's own record — in the app's private database, on your device — so your history and charts can show it later without asking Health again. Like everything else in that database, it is never transmitted anywhere.
- The app never writes to Apple Health, except when you use the Apple Watch companion: ending a watch-tracked session saves that workout to Apple Health, on your device, under your control.
- Health data is never used for advertising, marketing, or any purpose other than showing it to you inside the app.
- You can revoke access at any time in the iOS Settings app under Privacy & Security ▸ Health.
Microphone and speech recognition
After a workout you can record a voice note of up to thirty seconds. The recording is transcribed by iOS's on-device speech recogniser: the audio is never written to disk and is discarded as soon as transcription finishes. Only the resulting text is kept, in that session's notes, exactly as if you had typed it. If your device cannot transcribe entirely offline, the app does not record at all — there is no cloud fallback.
iOS's own permission sheet mentions that speech data "will be sent to Apple"; that is Apple's fixed wording, shown for every app. Grip & Balance requests on-device recognition only. You can revoke microphone and speech access at any time in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security.
Coach Mode (training other people)
Coach Mode is off by default. If you turn it on, you can keep separate profiles for people you train: a display name you choose, their routines and logged sessions, session notes, and optional markers such as a pain flag. All of it lives in the same private database on your device, under the same rules as your own training — no account is created for a client, nothing is synced, and nothing is transmitted. A client's data leaves the device only when you yourself share it with the iOS share sheet, and deleting a client's profile deletes their data.
If you are a practitioner, you remain responsible for your own professional records — Grip & Balance is not a clinical record.
Exporting your data
Settings ▸ Export workout history writes your sets, blocks and cardio segments to CSV files and hands them to the iOS share sheet. Nothing is uploaded: the app has no network access and no destination of its own. Where those files go — Files, Mail, another app — is entirely your choice, and once they leave the share sheet they are outside the app and outside this policy. This is the only way training data leaves your device.
Notifications
Rest-timer alerts are local notifications scheduled entirely on your device. No notification content is sent to any server.
Data retention and deletion
All data lives on your device and under your control. Deleting the app deletes its database. There is nothing to delete on our side, because we hold nothing.
Children
Grip & Balance does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
This website
gripandbalance.com keeps the same promise as the app: it sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and makes no third-party requests. The web server keeps ordinary technical logs (as virtually all web servers do); nothing on this site identifies or profiles you.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of the app changes how data is handled, this page will be updated before that version ships, with a new effective date.
